Enoch

Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.

Genesis gives him four verses. He does not die; he is simply gone. Around those verses grew a whole literature: the Watchers who came down on Mount Hermon, the crystal houses of heaven, the scribe who was asked to plead for the fallen and was told no, and at last Metatron, the man made into the prince of the presence, with seventy-two wings. The tradition calls what happened to him translation: taken up without dying.

Genesis 5:18–24

18Jared lived one hundred sixty-two years, then became the father of Enoch. 19Jared lived after he became the father of Enoch eight hundred years, and became the father of other sons and daughters. 20All of the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty-two years, then he died. 21Enoch lived sixty-five years, then became the father of Methuselah. 22After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch walked with God for three hundred years, and became the father of more sons and daughters. 23All the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty-five years. 24Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.

Hebrews 11:5–6

5By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God. 6Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

Jude 1:14–15

14About these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15to execute judgment on all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
